Job Description:
Overview of Position:As a Laboratory Animal Veterinary
Technician, the incumbent will be responsible for providing support
to senior veterinary staff, Directors of Animal Care, Breeding
Colonies and research staff in the care and use of research animals
in Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approved
research studies. Under report to the Director of Breeding and
Veterinary Services and with guidance from the responsible VP for
Veterinary Operations, this position provides veterinary care and
support for the laboratory animal population including day to day
health monitoring and maintenance, training of investigative staff
in animal techniques and providing assistance in ongoing research
studies. Responsibilities include veterinary care supporting where
appropriate the Directors of Animal Care and Breeding Colonies of
genetically engineered and/or specific pathogen free laboratory
rodents, laboratory animal behavior management and environmental
enrichment, animal health and wellbeing, collaboration and support
for ongoing research studies, experimental procedures, and surgery
for all housed laboratory species.Job Responsibilities: --- Daily
health checks and rounds to include examination of flagged
veterinary issues by animal care staff. Diagnose and treat as per
recommendations by staff veterinarians in consultation with the
principal investigator --- Timely reporting of animal health and
welfare issues to staff veterinarians and principal investigator so
that appropriate action is taken --- House quarantine animals and
perform required testing --- Assist in compliance with approved
animal safety protocols involving administration and use of hazards
in animals including biosafety protocols --- Perform testing and
reports required for exports to be signed by staff veterinarians as
appropriate --- Sample submissions and packaging to appropriate
contract lab --- Maintain and stock procedure rooms/surgery rooms.
Report on procedure conditions required for surgery and cleanup by
the responsible research staff --- Maintain PVC kits used to treat
clinical cases --- Maintain, document use, and distribute
noncontrolled substances/drugs -place orders as needed --- Assist
in maintaining appropriate post-operative care --- Train staff in
veterinary techniques such as routes of drug administration,
surgery preparation, and anesthesia in rodent survival surgery ---
Write/update SOPs under guidance of the VP for Veterinary
Operations --- Organize scheduling of PMs on all animal procedure
equipment --- Quarterly & semiannual sentinel testing --- Perform
routine (quarterly/semi-annual) ATP testing of behavioral equipment
--- Assist with autoclaving instruments and supplies for surgery
--- Provide support for maintaining breeding colonies as
