Performs moderate to high complexity testing.
Requirements:
Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology.
Experience: Successful candidate will be required to work in Blood
Bank and the Core Laboratory on a rotational basis. Recent
graduates are welcome and encouraged to apply.
Certification/License: ASCP certification or ASCP eligible is
required
Essential Functions of the Job:
Evaluates specimens and test orders for acceptability and
determines rejections according to established guidelines.
Accessions specimens with accuracy. Maintains and assures positive
identity of all patient specimens, specimen types and aliquots
throughout the analytical process.
Follows laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and
processing, test analyses and reporting and maintaining records of
patient tests results.
Identifies, labels and stores specimens properly, according to
laboratory policy.
Organizes work to maintain efficient workflow.
Performs and records tests in one or more sections of the
Laboratory under the indirect supervision of a section supervisor
according to Lab policy.
Performs all emergency procedures required within the section
according to lab policy.
Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of difficult principles,
procedures and techniques and the ability to make independent
judgements on the basis of scientific knowledge. Supervises
personnel of less skill and experience.
Meets acceptable turnaround time for the department.
Meets productivity standards of the department.
Recognizes testing errors/discrepancies or problems affecting test
results. Either corrects the problem or notifies appropriate
supervisor on a timely basis.
Operates all instruments according to accepted written
protocols.
Recognizes and identifies instrument problems.
Resolves instrument problems or contacts appropriate technical
service representative or Clinical Engineering when necessary.
Performs and documents all routine and non-routine maintenance as
in Standard Operating Procedures.
Performs and documents all Quality Control according to established
Laboratory protocol.
Follows laboratory established corrective action policies and
procedures whenever test systems are not within laboratory's
acceptable level of performance. Documents all corrective actions
taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established
performance specifications.
Performs proficiency testing. Ensures that proficiency testing
samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
Participates in Performance Improvement projects as requested.
Calls and documents abnormal, critical or STAT results according to
established protocol.
Correlates test results with diagnosis and/or compares with
previous results if available. Recognizes and resolves problems or
inconsistencies.
Assists in maintaining legible, accurate and complete section
records and files. Assists in compiling statistical data for tests
performed in the section.
Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the hospital (HIS) and
laboratory information systems (LIS) and their application to all
aspects of job related functions. (Result retrieval, entering
results, crediting, etc.)
Utilizes LIS to review workload, assuring proper collection,
completion and reporting of tests ordered.
Enters all results completely and accurately.
Recognizes and resolves minor computer problems. Notifies LIS
manager of problems.
Maintains a clean, neat and orderly workplace. Cleans
refrigerators, incubators, centrifuges, computer terminal screens
and all general laboratory equipment.
Processes receipt of departmental supplies. Labels, records and
stores supplies received.
Reviews quantities and expiration dates of all supplies. Maintains
inventory as needed for department.
Prepares reagents/media.
Participates in orientation, instruction and training of others
(new personnel/off-hour staff members and students) as required by
department.
Instructs Nursing personnel, or other health care workers in
patient preparation for tests and in obtaining and handling
specimens.
Assists physicians, hospital personnel, patients and general public
with pertinent laboratory information. Directs questions or
problems to appropriate personnel.
Prepares specimens for dispatch to reference laboratories.
Keeps current in the field of medical technology through
literature, attendance at workshops, seminars and in-service
programs. Maintains membership in professional organizations.
May assume responsibilities of section supervisors in their
absence.
Participates in weekend on-premise supervision of the general
laboratory as assigned and as necessary.
Informs section supervisor or laboratory administration of problems
which affect the safety, function or reputation of the Department
of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine or the hospital in a timely
and judicious manner.
Understands and practices standard precautions and infection
control to protect both self and patient. Practices hospital and
laboratory safety according to policies and procedures. Is familiar
with emergency procedures, codes and use of personal protective
equipment. Reports incidents as necessary.
Job performance requires extensive standing, walking, reaching,
stooping, kneeling and crouching.
Cooperates with lab staff to achieve lab goals and maintains good
employee relations, interdepartmental relations and public
relations.
Performs other related duties as requested.
